Sharon Stone has expressed her lack of enthusiasm toward the announced reboot of 'Basic Instinct', the iconic 1992 erotic thriller that helped launch her to international stardom.

In a recent interview with TODAY, Sharon Stone made it clear she’s not convinced a remake is necessary. She implied that if the new version follows the same storyline as the original, she doesn’t understand the motivation behind it. Stone also hinted that anyone taking on the project may face a tough challenge, wishing them luck — though not sounding confident that it will live up to the original.

The original 'Basic Instinct' featured Sharon Stone, now 67, in the unforgettable role of Catherine Tramell — a seductive crime novelist who becomes a prime suspect in a murder investigation led by Detective Nick Curran, played by Michael Douglas. The intense psychological thriller explored a tangled relationship between the two characters and became both a cultural sensation and a lightning rod for controversy.

More About 'Basic Instinct' Reboot

According to Variety, the new reboot will be written by Joe Eszterhaz, who penned the original script. The project is being developed by United Artists under Scott Stuber, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios. Early reports even suggested that Sharon Stone might make some kind of return or cameo, although nothing has been confirmed.

When the film debuted in 1992, it sparked major debate. While it received Oscar nominations for Best Film Editing and Best Original Score, it was also heavily criticised for its portrayal of queer characters and for its explicit content — particularly an infamous interrogation scene that has become a fixture in pop culture history.

Despite the controversies, the film became a box office hit and cemented Sharon Stone as a pop culture icon — though she’s previously noted that the role didn’t bring her the professional respect she’d hoped for.

The criticism surrounding 'Basic Instinct' even led to live protests during Stone’s 'Saturday Night Live' appearance in April 1992, with several demonstrators arrested during her monologue. A sequel to the film was released in 2006, with Sharon Stone reprising her role, although it was written and produced by a different creative team.

As fans speculate about the reboot, Stone’s comments add a layer of scepticism to the project's reception. Whether or not the new version can capture the intrigue — or controversy — of the original remains to be seen.
