Fans will have to wait longer for 'Shrek 5', as Universal and DreamWorks have moved its release from 23rd December, 2026, to 30th June, 2027 — the sequel’s second delay since its original July 2026 date.

Although no official reason was given for the shift, Universal has a track record of major box office success with animated releases during the summer season. Blockbusters like 'Despicable Me', 'How to Train Your Dragon', and 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' have all soared during that time of year, hinting that the studio views June as the perfect launch pad for its biggest animated releases.

More on 'Shrek 5' Schedule

'Shrek 5' is scheduled to arrive in theatres just days before Sony’s animated 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse'. Its previous December slot would have seen the family-friendly adventure debut shortly after Disney’s 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Ice Age 6', both major box office contenders.

As part of its schedule shuffle, Universal has bumped up Illumination’s mystery event film to April 2027, moving it from its late-June release.

'Shrek 5' will see the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, while Zendaya joins the cast in a mystery role. The film will be directed by long-time series collaborators Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn.

When it finally arrives in cinemas, 'Shrek 5' will premiere 26 years after the original 2001 classic, which reimagined fairy-tale tropes through the lens of a grumpy but lovable ogre and his eccentric companions. The first film earned nearly $500 million worldwide, won the inaugural Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and spawned three sequels — 'Shrek 2' (2004), 'Shrek the Third', released in 2007, and 'Shrek Forever After' (2010) — as well as two 'Puss in Boots' spin-offs.
