‘Frankenstein in Romania’: Sebastian Stan to Lead Radu Jude-Penned Film

Romanian director Radu Jude, famed for films like 'Kontinental 25' and 'Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn', is premiering 'Dracula' at Locarno while already developing his next project. His upcoming film will centre on one of literature’s most enduring horror creations — 'Frankenstein' — and will star Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Sebastian Stan.

Jude revealed that the project, titled 'Frankenstein in Romania', will place the iconic monster within a distinctly Romanian setting. He reportedly envisions Sebastian Stan portraying both Victor Frankenstein and the creature, bringing a dual performance to the screen. Stan, originally from Romania and now living in the U.S., had spoken before about teaming up with Jude. When the director approached him with the idea, he was immediately on board.

'Frankenstein in Romania' Will be a Gothic Horror

The film’s premise is expected to blend the historical reality of a former CIA black site in Romania with the Gothic legend of Frankenstein’s monster, promising a mix of political intrigue and horror.

Jude’s news arrives as Guillermo del Toro’s 'Frankenstein', starring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth, prepares to debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

The director has had a prolific 2025. Earlier this year, 'Kontinental 25', an absurdist comedy-drama exploring Romania’s housing crisis and the struggles of its middle class, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, winning the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. His newest work, 'Dracula', will be screened in the main competition at Locarno, offering a darkly comedic take on the vampire mythos, though the festival has warned that its content may unsettle some viewers.

Following 'Dracula', Jude intends to film a drama inspired by Octave Mirbeau’s 'The Diary of a Chambermaid'. This future project will address themes of immigration and the experience of Romanians working abroad, focusing on a woman employed by a French family while her young daughter remains at home. Unlike the horror-infused Dracula, this work will lean toward a more serious tone, echoing the social and political undercurrents of 'Kontinental 25'.

With 'Frankenstein in Romania', Jude appears set to combine classic horror mythology with Romania’s complex history, offering Sebastian Stan a challenging and unconventional role.
