As HBO’s highly anticipated 'Harry Potter' reboot series gears up for its 2027 debut, the original stars of the beloved franchise continue to thrive in new and exciting roles. Among them is Daniel Radcliffe, who gained global recognition as the Boy Who Lived but has since carved out a diverse and critically acclaimed career. One of his most celebrated performances to date is his role in the Tony-winning Broadway revival of 'Merrily We Roll Along', which is now headed to theatres.

Originally premiering in 2023, the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical quickly earned widespread acclaim, with Radcliffe’s portrayal of Charley Kringas standing out as a career-defining moment. Two years after its debut, 'Merrily We Roll Along' is now set for a theatrical release. Sony Pictures Classics has confirmed the film adaptation will hit U.S. theatres beginning 5th December 2025, through a partnership with speciality distributor Fathom Entertainment. The release will also expand internationally, including in the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

What is 'Merrily We Roll Along' About?

Directed by Maria Friedman, the film adaptation brings new life to the 1981 musical that traces the emotional journey of composer Franklin Shepard and his two closest friends—writer Mary Flynn and playwright/lyricist Charley Kringas. Daniel Radcliffe takes on the role of Charley, joined by Jonathan Groff as Franklin and Lindsay Mendez as Mary. Audiences can expect iconic Sondheim numbers like 'Old Friends,' 'Now You Know,' 'Franklin Shepard, Inc.,' and 'Not a Day Goes By.'

The 2023 revival was not the first iteration of 'Merrily We Roll Along', but it proved to be the most successful. Past productions have appeared Off-Broadway and in London’s West End, but Friedman’s latest version broke new ground. It recouped its $12 million capitalisation just six months after opening and swept the 2024 Tony Awards, winning Best Revival of a Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Groff, Best Featured Actor for Radcliffe, and Best Orchestrations for Jonathan Tunick.
