When Hollywood legend Paul Newman offered advice, George Clooney listened—and decades later, that wisdom still resonates.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, George Clooney opened up about a pivotal moment with Paul Newman during the late 1990s, when both actors were working at Warner Bros. Paul Newman was filming 'Message in a Bottle,' while George Clooney was starring on 'ER.' At the time, Clooney approached the veteran actor simply to introduce himself. Although Newman initially didn't recognise him, it quickly became clear through passing studio interactions that George Clooney was gaining recognition and success in the industry.

Paul Newman's Advice to George Clooney

Over time, Newman offered Clooney a piece of guidance that deeply impacted how he handled fame. George Clooney explained that Paul Newman cautioned him against isolating himself in an effort to preserve privacy. Instead, Newman encouraged him not to allow fame to trap him indoors or disconnected from real life. Clooney admitted that he had been leaning toward withdrawing from public spaces at the time, and Newman’s perspective helped him reframe that instinct immediately.

One of the most influential performances, according to Clooney, was Newman's role in 'The Verdict.' He noted the subtle power of Newman's courtroom monologue, particularly how he defied traditional acting instincts by softening rather than escalating at the climax of the scene—a technique Clooney considers one of the greatest performances in film history.
