Disney and 20th Century Studios said on 29th September, that a sequel to 'The Simpsons' Movie would be released on 23rd July, 2027. A teaser poster depicting Homer's hand reaching for a pink frosted doughnut shaped like the number "2" and the humorous phrase, "Homer's coming back for seconds," was used to spread the word on social media.
A previously planned untitled Marvel movie on Disney's calendar is being replaced with the sequel, creating a void in the Marvel release schedule between 'Avengers: Doomsday' (December 2026), and 'Avengers: Secret Wars' (December 2027).

This announcement makes the sequel a sort of anniversary event, as the original 'Simpsons' movie debuted in July 2007—nearly 20 years ago. Insiders anticipate that many members of the original voice cast, including Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa), will return, even though the official title, plot, and full production details are not yet available to the public.
Looking Back: The Original Movie & Why the Wait
With a production budget of over USD 75 million, the first 'Simpsons' movie (2007) was a huge success, grossing over USD 536 million worldwide. In that movie, Homer unintentionally contaminated Springfield's water supply, which led the EPA to erect a huge glass dome above the city. The plot revolved around his attempts to save Springfield after the Simpsons and their neighbours went on the run. In a clever prelude to a long-awaited sequel, baby Maggie asks, "Sequel?" at the end of the credits.

For years, there have been rumours about a sequel. Producer James L. Brooks stated that Fox had contacted him on a follow-up as early as 2014. But due to issues with the pandemic, the state of the box office, and the difficulties of making a big feature film from the infrastructure of a TV series, development stagnated.
According to Matt Groening, the first movie's production was extremely difficult because the same team that worked on the show also worked on the film, and there was no "B-team" to help with the workload. The timing of Springfield's big-screen comeback seems ideal, given the show is currently in its 37th season and has been renewed through at least season 40.

What Can Fans Expect?
With much still unknown, fans are speculating what kinds of stories the sequel might explore. Given The Simpsons TV show's long legacy of social satire, pop culture parodies, and emotional moments, many expect the film to balance humour, commentary, and heart.
The teaser art suggests that the theme might be related to Homer's famous appetite, especially for doughnuts. It is anticipated that seasoned producers like James L. Brooks and Matt Groening will continue to work behind the scenes in order to maintain the essence of the program.
More than just a nostalgic return to theaters, 'The Simpsons' offers a chance to reintroduce Springfield's satire to a younger audience and remind viewers of the cultural significance of Homer, Lisa, Bart, Marge, and Maggie.
