Nearly four decades after it first arrived in Springfield, 'The Simpsons' is still going strong—and according to showrunner Matt Selman, fans should not expect a tearful goodbye anytime soon.

As the series celebrates its massive 800th episode milestone, Selman shared that while the show could technically end one day, he has no intention of giving the Simpson family a traditional series finale.

Matt Selman's Plan For 'The Simpsons'

Matt Selman revealed that about a year and a half ago, the team already created what was essentially a playful fake finale. The episode crammed in every possible ending cliché, poking fun at the idea of wrapping everything up neatly. For Selman, that was his way of saying the show will never have a true final episode. They already did one in the middle of the series—and turned it into a joke.

Selman explained that the show's format simply does not allow for a big, permanent ending. The characters reset every week. Nothing really changes in the long term. He compared it to 'Groundhog Day,' except the characters are unaware they are reliving a version of the same life over and over—and they rarely stay dead. If the show ever does stop, he said it would likely end with just a normal episode featuring the family, maybe with a few subtle Easter eggs, but no emotional farewell speech about missing Springfield.

Created by Matt Groening in 1987 as animated shorts on 'The Tracey Ullman Show,' the Simpson family quickly earned its own primetime slot on Fox in 1989. Now in its 37th season, the series continues to break records.

The milestone 800th episode, titled 'Irrational Treasure,' airs Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. And the franchise is not slowing down. Disney+ has launched a dedicated Simpsons channel, and a new movie is already set to hit theatres in July 2027.

In other words, life in Springfield is business as usual—and it looks like it will stay that way for a long time.
