Brad Pitt recently opened up about a difficult chapter in his career, revealing that the mid-1990s marked what he called “the most unhealthy time” in his life. Speaking on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, the actor said that after a string of unsatisfying blockbuster roles, he found himself mentally and creatively adrift in the summer of 1994.
Pitt admitted that he had fallen into a rut, spending his days with unhealthy habits — including skipping meals, watching the O.J. Simpson trial, and trying to figure out his next move. He felt disillusioned with the film industry and unsure of where to go next in his career.
That changed when his manager, Cynthia Pett-Dante, sent him the script for Se7en. At first, Pitt wasn’t sold. He said he was put off by what seemed like a cliché storyline about a jaded veteran detective and his eager young partner. However, Cynthia urged him to read the entire script, and once he did — and later met with director David Fincher — his perspective shifted completely.

Pitt shared that Fincher’s deep, passionate approach to talking about film reignited his excitement for acting. He said the meeting made him feel reconnected to his craft, explaining that he “got the jones back,” and that the project rekindled his excitement for what filmmaking could be.
‘Se7en’: A Defining Moment for Pitt and Fincher
Released in 1995, Se7en marked a pivotal moment in the careers of both Pitt and Fincher. The dark psychological thriller, which follows two detectives on the trail of a killer inspired by the seven deadly sins, also stars Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey. It remains one of the most influential thrillers of the era — and, as Pitt now reflects, a pivotal moment in his own creative journey.
