Ed Sheeran Shares How ‘Drive’ Came Together for Brad Pitt’s ‘F1’ Film Soundtrack

Ed Sheeran spoke about creating ‘Drive’ for Brad Pitt’s F1 film, saying it was inspired by the character’s journey, not his own. Made with John Mayer and Blake Slatkin, the track features Dave Grohl and others, and was released on 20th June.

Ed Sheeran recently appeared on the red carpet at the European premiere of F1, the upcoming racing film starring Brad Pitt, where he opened up about contributing to its official soundtrack. Speaking to presenter Clara Amfo, Sheeran said he was excited to finally watch the film on the big screen, having only seen an early version on a much smaller one.

The singer-songwriter reflected on the unique process of writing ‘Drive’, explaining that the song was crafted to reflect the journey of Pitt’s character, rather than his own life. He noted that the brief specifically asked for a track rooted in the story of the film, something he doesn’t often do. “It’s less about me,” he said, “and more about the story and where the character’s at.”

Sheeran also revealed that timing played a crucial role in his decision to take on the project. While he is regularly approached to create songs for films, the F1 opportunity came while he happened to be in the studio with producer Blake Slatkin. The two were working alongside John Mayer at the time and decided to experiment with ideas, which ultimately led to the creation of ‘Drive’.

Sheeran Calls ‘Drive’ a Passion Project With All-Star Line-up

The track, which released on 20th June, features an impressive lineup of musicians: Mayer on guitar, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl on drums, Pino Palladino on bass, and Rami Jaffee on keyboards. According to Sheeran, the song came together quickly. Speaking to Billboard, he said it “just fell out of us,” and described how Mayer added energy to the track by playing through an octave pedal.

He added that contributing to a film project holds special meaning for him, as cinema is one of his biggest passions outside of music and sport. Being part of a film’s creative journey, he said, remains a thrilling experience.
