One of Scandinavia's most beloved cultural exports, the Moomins, is finally coming to American cinemas. Annapurna Animation is producing the first U.S.-made Moomins feature film, with 'Steven Universe' creator Rebecca Sugar set to write and direct. The project follows Annapurna’s critically acclaimed animated film 'Nimona,' which was also developed by a renowned television animation creator, ND Stevenson of 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.'

This new film marks the Moomins' first big-screen appearance in over 30 years. Originally created by Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson, the characters' rights are now managed by her family.

Who Are the Moomins?

The Moomins first appeared in Jansson's 1945 book 'The Moomins and the Great Flood.' They are a friendly, white, hippopotamus-like troll family living in the idyllic Moominvalley. Known for their sociable nature, the Moomins have welcomed a variety of other creatures into their lives over the years. Jansson went on to create nine novels, five picture books, and a syndicated comic strip before passing away in 2001.

The characters have become an international phenomenon and have gained renewed popularity online as internet memes. The Moomins have also been adapted for television multiple times, including traditional and stop-motion animation, a live-action series, and, most recently, 'Moominvalley,' a Finnish-British computer-animated series that ran from 2019 to 2024 and featured voices from Taron Egerton, Rosamund Pike, and Matt Berry.

With Annapurna Animation developing the new Moomins movie, fans can expect a fresh and inclusive cinematic take on these timeless characters, introducing the whimsical world of Moominvalley to audiences old and new.
