Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has made his stance on generative AI crystal clear — he has no plans ever to use it in his work. Speaking recently on NPR's 'Fresh Air' podcast, the Oscar-winning director emphasised that he has no interest in incorporating AI technology into his creative process in his works.

At 61, Guillermo del Toro explained that his filmmaking is rooted in human emotion, craftsmanship, and imperfection—qualities he believes artificial intelligence cannot replicate.

Despite AI's growing influence in Hollywood, the 'Shape of Water' and 'Pan's Labyrinth' creator said he didn't even consider using it for his upcoming adaptation of 'Frankenstein', which will debut on Netflix this November.

Guillermo del Toro's Inspiration for 'Frankenstein'

Interestingly, del Toro found inspiration for 'Frankenstein' in the very people who advocate for AI innovation. He drew comparisons between Victor Frankenstein's reckless ambition and the mindset of modern-day tech leaders, describing both as driven by the same kind of unchecked arrogance—a pursuit of creation without fully considering the consequences.

The director noted that his real concern lies not with artificial intelligence itself, but with the human tendency toward shortsightedness and overconfidence that often accompanies technological progress.

More on Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein'

Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein' offers a fresh interpretation of Mary Shelley's classic tale. The film stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the creature, whose design departs from the traditional square-headed monster. In del Toro's vision, the creature is portrayed with long hair, pale skin, and a patchwork of delicate scars—a look meant to reflect both beauty and tragedy.

The director describes Victor as a figure torn between art and science, whose obsession with creation defines his identity. This version of the story explores how ambition, innovation, and the desire to transcend nature can blur ethical boundaries—a theme del Toro feels resonates deeply in today's era of rapid technological advancement.

'Frankenstein' also features Felix Kammerer, Mia Goth, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz in supporting roles. The film premiered in select theatres on 17th October, 2025, and will be available to stream globally on Netflix starting 7th November.

By rejecting AI and focusing on handcrafted storytelling, Guillermo del Toro reinforces his belief that true artistry stems from humanity itself—not from algorithms or automation. His latest film stands as both a gothic masterpiece and a modern reflection on the dangers of creation without conscience.
