Christopher Nolan has lifted the curtain on his ambitious reimagining of Homer's classic epic with the first look images from his film 'The Odyssey,' and the casting reveals are already fueling excitement. Matt Damon plays Odysseus in the eagerly anticipated adaptation, but the latest focus is on Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Mia Goth, whose parts have finally been confirmed.
Holland appears in ancient armour as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope.

Hathaway brings quiet strength to Penelope, his faithful wife, while Goth embodies Melantho, one of Penelope's trusted—yet potentially complicated—maids. With these character selections, Nolan's adaptation stands out as both emotionally resonant and expansive, hinting to a deep, character-driven story. The movie is scheduled to be released on 17th July, 2026.

From Ancient Epic to Modern Screen: The Origins of 'The Odyssey'

One of the most renowned pieces of ancient literature is the Odyssey, which is credited to the Greek poet Homer sometime in the eighth century BCE. It tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his perilous ten-year journey home after the Trojan War, facing mythical creatures, divine interventions, and human challenges along the way.

With an emphasis on Odysseus's hardships at sea as well as those suffered by his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, at home, the poem examines themes of bravery, loyalty, guile, and the eternal strength of family.

Over centuries, this tale has inspired countless adaptations in literature, theater, and film. By fusing the grandeur of Homer's story with the deep reality of contemporary filmmaking, Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation aims to transform this timeless tale into a cinematic epic, offering viewers both visual splendor and emotional depth.

Nolan's Vision for a Mythic, Real-World Epic

Christopher Nolan has referred to 'The Odyssey' as a sweeping "mythic action epic" that combines the vast spectacle that only film can provide with the emotional intimacy of Homer's poem. In keeping with his signature aesthetic, Nolan has made usage of IMAX 70mm cameras to film the movie in true, natural settings, such as coastal areas and areas that looks aged, in order to achieve realism. By grounding classic myth in raw, physical environments, he aims to give audiences not just the grandeur of Odysseus's journey, but a very human connection to the characters he meets across the sea.

Holland, Hathaway & Goth: Fleshing Out Home, Family, and Intrigue

Some of The Odyssey's main characters and how director Christopher Nolan intends to examine their involvement in Odysseus' protracted quest are revealed in the first look pictures. Tom Holland portrays Telemachus, Odysseus's son, who is dressed in durable armour and has a resolute face, likely grappling with both hope and frustration during his father's absence.

As Penelope, Anne Hathaway stands tall and watchful while she awaits Odysseus's return. In one still, she is shown holding a bow, demonstrating her grace, elegance, and readiness. Mia Goth, meantime, is shown in a more straightforward function as Melantho, one of Penelope's maids. She is positioned near Penelope in the pictures and wears basic clothing, implying a duty that is both devoted and perhaps conflicted.

Their selection seems incredibly deliberate: Melantho's figure portrays the perilous moral and social relationships within Odysseus's family, while Penelope and Telemachus have always been at the center of Homer's original. In addition to these three, Nolan's epic has a large cast that includes Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, and more.
