Fans hoping to unwrap 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Movie this Christmas will have to wait a little longer. The team hasn't had time to start filming because of the demanding production schedule of Season 3, even though creator Jenny Han said that the script is officially finished. Han clarified that the film requires space to be executed properly, particularly as it is her feature film directing debut and is anticipated to provide Belly, Conrad, Jeremiah, and the entire Cousins Beach story with a meaningful and significant conclusion. Her update offers clarity, reassurance, and a reminder that good things, especially long-awaited adaptations, take time.

From Beloved Series to Big-Screen Plans

Over the course of its three seasons on Prime Video, the young adult drama 'The Summer I Turned Pretty,' which is based on the novels of author Jenny Han, was quickly able to gain international acclaim. Viewers followed protagonist Belly's emotional journey through teenage summers, friendship upheavals, love triangles, heartbreaks, and coming-of-age dilemmas. With its genuine depictions of first love and self-discovery, likable characters, and emotional storytelling, the show captured million hearts.

Many fans were both content and nostalgic when Season 3 came to an end, and enthusiasm skyrocketed when a film was confirmed as the last installment. With the possibility to explore a new "major milestone" in Belly's life that couldn't fit into regular episodes, the movie promises to offer Belly, Conrad, Jeremiah, and the rest of the Cousins Beach team a fitting ending.

Many believed the movie would be released soon, possibly even as a Christmas 2025 treat, due to the show's success and loyal fan base. These hopes were heightened by the Season 3 finale's joyous tone and holiday-themed visuals. As much as fans had anticipated, the truth behind the scenes proved to be more complicated.

Why the Movie Can't Drop This Christmas—Jenny Han Speaks

Jenny Han said in a candid update at TheWrap's 2025 Power Women Summit that although the movie script is finished, production has not yet started. "I just wrote it," she said. "We have not filmed anything yet." She explained that, given the short timeline, a Christmas 2025 release was never likely possible. According to Jenny, there was hardly enough time to start filming a full-length movie because the third season's post-production ended just one month before the show debuted in July. In her words: "The show came out in July…so it was really up to the last minute on the show, so that we wouldn't have had time to film the whole movie."

Han emphasized the significance of giving the movie the time and attention it deserves, despite the fact that fans may be disappointed. She pointed out that instead of rushing into production for the sake of a Christmas deadline, the additional breathing room would enable actors, notably Lola Tung’s portrayal of Belly, to truly transition into their characters' next chapter.

What the Movie Could Explore—And What Fans Can Expect?

While many specifics remain under wraps, Jenny Han has teased that the movie will pick up where Season 3 left off, exploring a "big milestone" in Belly's life—a turning point that could involve love, growth, and perhaps major life changes. Although production hasn't begun yet, Han and co-writer Sarah Kucserka are already working on the project, and will also mark Han's first feature film.

Regarding the release date, Han and official updates indicate that it is unlikely to occur in 2026, realistically pushing expectations to a debut as early as 2027. For now, fans will have to be patient—but with the movie still on the horizon and a story worth concluding, waiting might just make the return to Cousins Beach even sweeter.
