Ruth Gibbins, sister of the late Liam Payne, has shared her feelings of pride and grief as the singer appears posthumously in Netflix’s upcoming series ‘Building the Band’. Payne had completed filming for the show before his death in October 2024 at the age of 31.
In a post shared via Instagram Stories on 24th June, Gibbins reflected on the release of the trailer, which had dropped earlier in the month. She explained that while she was unsure whether to speak publicly, it felt strange not to, given how often she had celebrated her brother’s work over the years.
Gibbins said Payne had known he had done a good job on the show, with his family encouraging him during filming. However, watching the final result, she reportedly felt a new wave of emotion and pride. She remarked that it was heartbreaking he hadn’t lived to see how good he truly was on screen. According to her, one of the strongest emotions she experienced while watching was what she described as “immeasurable pride”. She added that she missed him more every day and would always consider him a star.

Payne’s death occurred on 16th October 2024 after a fatal fall from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires. The Argentine prosecutor’s office later confirmed the cause of death as multiple traumas, along with both internal and external bleeding.
Back in April, Gibbins had also shared a message marking six months since her brother’s passing. She described the ongoing pain of living without him and said each day still felt like a struggle. She noted that while she was learning to function, it remained exhausting, and moments of laughter were now tinged with sadness. She recalled fond memories, including a time when they were laughing together while attempting something they had seen on YouTube.
Payne’s Final Project ‘Building the Band’ to Debut on Netflix in July
Payne had signed on to participate in ‘Building the Band’ several months before his death. The show centres around aspiring singers forming bands based on musical chemistry and skill, rather than looks. He appeared on the judging panel alongside Kelly Rowland and Nicole Scherzinger, while AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys took on hosting duties. Netflix later confirmed that Payne’s family had viewed the series and given their support for its release.
The first four episodes of ‘Building the Band’ are set to premiere on Netflix on 9th July, with episodes five to seven arriving on 16th July and the final batch releasing on 23rd July.
