Lorde has looked back on her 2021 album ‘Solar Power’, saying in a recent interview that, while creating the record was necessary for her artistic journey, it ultimately made her realise it didn’t fully reflect her true self.
During a conversation on the podcast Therapuss with Jake Shane, the New Zealand singer recalled how the intense experience of touring her 2017 album ‘Melodrama’ had left her feeling overwhelmed. She shared that performing emotionally charged music night after night had pushed her to explore a more relaxed and gentle sound in her next project.
She acknowledged that, although she was proud of ‘Solar Power’ and believed she needed to create it, the process led her to important personal insight. She reflected that taking on a softer, more detached persona during that time didn’t feel entirely authentic to who she was, noting that she had realised, in hindsight, the approach wasn’t quite her.

Lorde had previously said in an interview that ‘Solar Power’ was influenced by a 2019 trip to Antarctica, where she observed climate research and went on helicopter excursions to spot whales. She said that the experience had shifted her focus away from celebrity culture and online distractions, which she felt had begun to stifle her creativity.
She explained that distancing herself from internet culture gave her the clarity to develop a sound more rooted in the natural world. She added that when someone is part of a creative community, there’s a tendency to move collectively in the same direction, and that she likely wouldn’t have been able to create something like ‘Solar Power’ a few years earlier, due to being caught in that collective momentum.
Lorde Gears Up for ‘Virgin’ Release and Global Tour
Now, Lorde is preparing for the release of her upcoming album ‘Virgin’, due out on 27th June. The album, previewed with singles such as ‘Man of The Year’ and ‘What Was That’, represents what she has described as a deeper and more personal phase of her artistry. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, she spoke about how exploring her gender identity, body image, and emotional growth has helped shape the album’s direction.
She is also set to embark on a global headline tour in support of ‘Virgin’, with performances lined up across the UK, Europe, and North America.
