The Met Gala 2026 is set to spotlight the human body as the heart of fashion's evolution. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that its spring exhibition, titled Costume Art, will explore the essential relationship between clothing and the physical form.
The exhibition will feature around 200 garments and accessories displayed alongside 200 artworks from ancient Western history to the modern era. Together, these pieces demonstrate how fashion and the human body have continuously shaped each other throughout time.
About Met Gala 2026
Scheduled for 4th May 2026, the Met Gala 2026 will mark the grand opening of the museum's Condé M. Nast Galleries, a new 12,000-square-foot area created from the former retail space. Curator Andrew Bolton explained that the exhibition will focus on the tactile, material aspects of fashion and the inseparable link between bodies and the garments they inhabit.

One highlighted pairing will place a 1504 Albrecht Dürer print of Adam and Eve beside Walter Van Beirendonck's 2009 spandex bodysuits, inspired by the same biblical figures. The exhibition will be arranged around thematic body categories that emphasise their recurring presence across cultures and eras. These include the Naked Body, the Classical Body, the Pregnant Body and the Mortal Body.
Standout Pieces in Exhibition
Vogue's early preview reveals several standout pieces, such as Georgina Godley's sculptural Pregnancy dress and a 2017 Comme des Garçons look featuring bold, exaggerated curves.
The Met Gala 2026 confirms that this new exhibition follows the massive success of the 2025 theme Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which raised a record-breaking $31 million for the Costume Institute. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez will serve as lead sponsors for the 2026 event, with additional celebrity co-chairs to be announced soon.

The Costume Art exhibition officially opens on 10th May 2026, and will run through 10th January 2027. The Met Gala itself, the primary fundraiser for the Costume Institute, will take place on May 4 and is expected to attract some of fashion's most influential and boundary-pushing guests.
