David Zucker, the legendary filmmaker behind the original 'Naked Gun' trilogy, has shared that he has no plans to watch the 2025 reboot of the classic spoof franchise — even though he wishes the best for the team behind it.

Zucker, who also directed iconic comedies like 'Airplane!' and contributed to the 'Scary Movie' series, is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the spoof genre. He helmed all three 'Naked Gun' films from 1988 to 1994, starring the late Leslie Nielsen — each a commercial success and cult favourite.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, David Zucker expressed that he’s pleased to see a renewed interest in spoof comedies at the box office. He acknowledged that the new reboot of 'Naked Gun', directed by Akiva Schaffer and starring Liam Neeson, is performing well and has been positively received by audiences. He reached out to Schaffer to congratulate him on the film's success and mentioned they may connect later when things settle down after the release.

Why David Zucker Won't Watch 'Naked Gun' Reboot?

Despite his support, David Zucker made it clear that he will not be watching the new film. He explained that he typically avoids watching sequels or reboots based on his original work when he’s not directly involved, as they don’t reflect his vision or creative input.

David Zucker revealed that he declined an invitation to view an early cut of the reboot, explaining that his feedback wouldn’t have added value since the approach of the new version differs significantly from what he would have done. Still, he emphasised that this doesn’t mean the film isn’t good — just that it’s not aligned with his creative direction.

Paramount reportedly offered Zucker an Executive Producer credit on the 'Naked Gun' reboot, which he turned down. He stated that he prefers not to take credit for projects he wasn’t involved with from the outset, adding that financial gain is not a motivating factor for him at this stage of his career.

The 2025 'Naked Gun' reboot has earned $28.5 million globally so far, signalling a win for comedy films in theatres — a genre that has struggled in recent years. The studio even released a humorous PSA to promote the film, leaning into its absurd comedic roots.

In related news, lead actor Liam Neeson has admitted that while the Taken films made him a global action star, he now feels somewhat embarrassed by them — showing a lighter, more self-aware side ahead of his turn in the rebooted spoof.
