A family tree investigation conducted by The New York Times, in collaboration with genealogists from American Ancestors and the Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami, has claimed that the pope shares ancestry with a slew of famous names including Madonna, Justin Bieber, Angelina Jolie and even Hillary Clinton.

Shared Canadian Roots Link Pope Leo to Celebrities

The report stated that a Canadian ancestor by the name of Louis Boucher de Grandpré, who was born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, connects the pope to various distant relatives with Canadian ties. This connection reportedly includes Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his father Pierre Trudeau, singer Justin Bieber, actress Angelina Jolie, former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and American literary figure Jack Kerouac.

Madonna, in particular, appears to be relishing the irony of the situation. The singer, who has long had a contentious relationship with the Catholic Church, shared the news on her Instagram story. Given her history of pushing boundaries using Catholic imagery — notably in her controversial ‘Like a Prayer’ video — and having reportedly been excommunicated three times, her reaction was unsurprisingly gleeful.

In a past social media post, Madonna had expressed interest in meeting Pope Francis, remarking that they should “meet up one day to discuss some important matters.” She pointed out that she had been excommunicated thrice, adding that it "doesn’t seem fair." The artist also once commented that she appreciated the approach of the current pontiff, saying he seemed more open-minded and that the Vatican’s repeated excommunications showed how seriously they took her actions.

Though the connections are described as distant and rooted in shared Canadian lineage, the notion that the pope might be related — even distantly — to some of the most prominent figures in entertainment and politics has certainly caught the pop culture world’s attention.
