Taylor Swift’s absence from the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards immediately caught fans' attention. Known for turning the VMAs into her stage with viral dance moves, heartfelt reactions, and headline-making announcements, the pop superstar decided not to attend this year. Her no-show marked the first time since 2021 that she missed the ceremony, sparking curiosity about what kept her away.
Even without dropping a new album in 2025, Swift still managed to land a nomination for Artist of the Year. The VMAs have historically been one of her favourite platforms to drop big surprises, but this time the spotlight belonged to her close friend and collaborator Sabrina Carpenter, who performed in her place, making Swift's absence even more noticeable.

Taylor Swift Prioritised Travis Kelce and NFL Season Kickoff
The most likely reason behind Taylor Swift's decision comes down to her fiancé, NFL star Travis Kelce. The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off their season on 5th September with a special opener held in Brazil, marking the start of their campaign on international turf. If Taylor Swift were there supporting Kelce, making it back to New York in time for the VMAs would have been nearly impossible. Without a new album cycle to promote or a scheduled performance, she may have chosen to skip the long journey and focus on her personal life.
Swift’s connection with Kelce has been no secret at the VMAs. At the 2024 ceremony, she referenced how his encouragement on set boosted her energy while filming her award-winning 'Fortnight' music video with Post Malone. This year, however, she opted to cheer him on from the sidelines instead of attending music's biggest night.

What’s Next for Taylor Swift Fans?
Although Taylor Swift skipped the 2025 VMAs, she has plenty in store for fans. Earlier this year, she revealed her upcoming album 'Life of a Showgirl' during an appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce’s football podcast. With the highly anticipated release ahead, many expect Swift to make a massive return to the VMAs stage in 2026 with new performances and award nominations.
Currently, Taylor Swift remains tied with Beyoncé as the most decorated artist in VMA history, with both holding 30 trophies. Whether she or Beyoncé breaks that tie in the future is yet to be seen, but one thing is certain: This year's show felt incomplete without Swift, and fans are already eagerly anticipating her return.
