‘Top Gun 3’ Plot Already Locked In, Writer Confirms: Sequel Closer Than Fans Expect

Fans eager for another high-octane chapter in the ‘Top Gun’ franchise just got an exciting update—'Top Gun 3' is officially taking shape, and the storyline is already complete.

 Christopher McQuarrie, the 56-year-old writer and producer behind the 2022 blockbuster ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, recently confirmed that the third film’s plot is already finalised. In an interview with Josh Horowitz for the most recent episode of the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, McQuarrie disclosed that the next instalment's development has gone surprisingly well.

 Contrary to expectations that a follow-up to ‘Maverick’ would be tough to crack, McQuarrie stated that the story came together quickly. He shared that his initial thoughts were sceptical, unsure of where to take the beloved ‘Top Gun’ franchise next. However, during a brainstorming session with co-writer Ehren Kruger, a compelling idea emerged almost immediately. The concept resonated so strongly that they needed just one conversation to lock in the framework for the third movie.

 According to McQuarrie, crafting a story for ‘Top Gun’ isn’t the hard part—it’s how the story is brought to life that defines its success. He emphasised that the execution, particularly the emotional resonance between characters, is what elevates the film. For him and Tom Cruise, maintaining the emotional core, like the legacy of ‘Maverick’ and his connection to Goose, is critical.

 The excitement surrounding ‘Top Gun 3’ has been building for months. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously hinted at the project earlier this year, revealing that a story had been pitched to Cruise, who responded positively. However, with Cruise's packed filming schedule, production timelines remain uncertain.

 Despite that, stars from ‘Maverick’ have added to the anticipation. Miles Teller, who plays Rooster, confirmed discussions with Cruise about a potential sequel as far back as mid-2022. Glen Powell, who portrayed Hangman, also disclosed in 2024 that a tentative filming date had been set.
