Her sister Gigi Hadid prayed for her strength and health, while her mother Yolanda Hadid replied, "Lyme warrior," with a red-heart emoji.
Understanding Her Lyme Disease Journey
Bella was initially diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2012, concurrently with the diagnoses of her brother Anwar Hadid and mother Yolanda. She has talked candidly over the years about the various symptoms she experiences, including joint pain, headaches, mental fog, exhaustion, sensitivity to light and noise, and mental health issues like anxiety and sadness.
After "nearly 15 years of invisible agony," Bella revealed in 2023 that she had finished more than 100 days of rigorous treatment for Lyme, chronic illness, and co-infections. She claimed to be doing better, but this current hospitalization indicates that flare-ups are still a part of her life. Bella's mother has called Lyme disease a "invisible impairment" and referred to it as "chronic neurological Lyme disease."
What Is Lyme Disease & Why Early Attention Matters
The bite of an infected tick bearing Borrelia burgdorferi is usually the cause of Lyme disease, a bacterial infection. Early symptoms, including as fever, headache, exhaustion, and a characteristic rash known as erythema migraines, may appear days to weeks after infection.
If Lyme disease is not treated in the early stages, it can result in long-term symptoms and more serious problems that impact the heart, joints, and brain system. Antibiotics are typically used in treatment; in chronic or late-stage instances, management also entails symptom control, rest, and perhaps more involved medical care.
The key to prevention is wearing protective gear, getting medical help right away, and properly checking for ticks after spending time outside. Despite having a well-known modeling career, Bella's sickness has required intermittent hospital stays and treatments, serving as a reminder to many that chronic illness may frequently be invisible.
