What is Helen Mirren's 'Thursday Murder Club' About?

The 'Thursday Murder Club', directed by Chris Columbus and based on Richard Osman’s bestselling novel, follows four retirees who entertain themselves by solving cold cases — until a real mystery unfolds. In the movie, Mirren appears with Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie.

Though Helen Mirren and Brosnan are not playing spouses in 'The Thursday Murder Club', they do portray a married couple in 'MobLand'. This new film marks their third time appearing together on screen since first collaborating in the 1980 crime drama 'The Long Good Friday'. Brosnan told THR that he admires Mirren for her talent and authenticity, which makes working together easy and enjoyable.

Mirren responded with equal respect, noting that she finds Brosnan down-to-earth and appreciates that they share a similar work ethic. She considers herself lucky to have worked closely with both Brosnan and Harrison Ford recently.

Their next on-screen reunion is already lined up in 'MobLand' season two, alongside Tom Hardy. Helen Mirren said scripts aren’t finalised yet, but filming is likely to begin later in the year.

Despite her busy workload, Mirren said she has no current plans to retire. She admitted she enjoys having time off, especially now that she feels she’s earned it, but she emphasised that she will continue acting as long as the projects excite her and she feels mentally and physically capable. Something still on her bucket list is performing in a challenging, unconventional theatre production — a goal she hopes to fulfil soon.

Netflix will start streaming 'The Thursday Murder Club' on 28th August.
