'Hello Kitty' Makes Big Screen Debut, Film's Release Set for July 2028

The worldwide phenomenon that is 'Hello Kitty' is finally making its way to the big screen. Created by Sanrio in 1974, 'Hello Kitty' has become a global pop-culture and merchandising icon, appearing on everything from stationery and fashion to theme parks and cafés. Now, for the first time, the character will star in a major Hollywood theatrical film, co-produced by Warner Bros. 

Pictures Animation and New Line Cinema. The film is scheduled for its worldwide release in July 2028. The project marks a milestone for Sanrio and for Hello Kitty's long-awaited transition from merchandise darling to cinematic star.

Since making her debut in Japan in the early 1970s, 'Hello Kitty' has evolved from a straightforward character to a representation of kindness, friendliness, and universal appeal. The impending movie is said to be the result of years of development and negotiations, with producer Beau Flynn reportedly spending over ten years securing the rights from Sanrio. 

While details about the plot remain light, the film is described as Hello Kitty's "Hollywood theatrical debut" and promises to bring her and her Sanrio friends to a broader audience than ever before. With Warner Bros. handling international distribution, the movie is well-positioned to usher in Hello Kitty's cinematic period and build upon her empire of commerce by delivering stories on the big screen.

What Can Fans Expect?

According to the studio statement, 'Hello Kitty' and her companions will go on a "cinematic adventure sure to delight audiences of all ages," even though the entire plot details are still under wraps. Dana Fox, who wrote the script for 'Wicked,' and Leo Matsuda, who has worked as a story-artist on well-known animated films, are the set film’s directors. Additionally, according to Sanrio, the themes will stick to the company’s core values of "kindness, connection, and friendship."

There's excitement about which of Hello Kitty's expansive cast of friends—characters like Gudetama, My Melody or Little Twin Stars—might appear in cameos or supporting roles.
