Though ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ is still months away from release, James Cameron is already preparing his next major project. The director recently announced that his production company Lightstorm Entertainment will be moving forward with a film adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s newly released fantasy novel ‘The Devils’. Cameron confirmed that he will co-write the script alongside Abercrombie himself.
‘The Devils’, which hit shelves just last month, is a dark fantasy take on ‘The Dirty Dozen’, where a group of literal demons are forced to join forces in a last-ditch effort to stop an oncoming apocalypse. Cameron expressed admiration for Abercrombie’s latest work, calling it a sharp, witty horror adventure with unpredictable twists and morally grey characters. He described the story as a “stylish, alt-universe Middle Ages romp,” where the so-called monsters might be humanity’s best hope.

The filmmaker noted that what stood out most was the book’s blend of dark humour, fast pacing, and deeply flawed characters, occasionally revealing flashes of redemption. Cameron said that Abercrombie’s vivid writing style, structured almost like a screenplay, made the decision to adapt it for the screen an obvious one.
Cameron also praised Abercrombie’s previous works, including the ‘First Law’ series and the ‘Age of Madness’ trilogy, singling out ‘Best Served Cold’ as a personal favourite. He said that while he has been a longtime fan of Abercrombie’s writing, it was the originality of ‘The Devils’ that finally inspired him to buy the rights and collaborate directly with the author. He shared his enthusiasm for the writing process and expressed confidence that the adaptation would come together naturally due to the book’s inherently cinematic structure.
Cameron Eyes a Genre Shift with ‘The Devils’
This new project adds to Cameron’s packed schedule, which already includes two more sequels in the ‘Avatar’ franchise and a planned adaptation of Charles Pellegrino’s ‘The Last Train From Hiroshima’. Although it’s not yet confirmed whether he will direct ‘The Devils’, Cameron’s shift from sci-fi to fantasy marks an exciting new direction in his storytelling.
