Filmmaker Celine Song, known for her unique approach in ‘Past Lives’, where she deliberately limited contact between actors Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro to heighten emotional tension, has taken a different route in her new film ‘Materialists’.
Song revealed that unlike ‘Past Lives’, the three leads in ‘Materialists’ were very much engaged with each other. She explained that they spent considerable time rehearsing to fine-tune the chemistry between their characters, as each scene required a distinct emotional dynamic. While ‘Materialists’ presents a different tone from her debut, it continues to explore romantic desires and the choices they compel—what Song described as the collision between “the heart and the head, and then the math and the non-math.”

Drawing on Personal Experience
Drawing on her own short stint as a matchmaker in New York, Song expressed deep respect for those who seek such services. She shared that during those six months, she learned more about people’s inner feelings than ever before. Many clients openly expressed the brave wish to simply “fall in love.” With ‘Materialists’, Song invites audiences to experience that yearning anew, this time on the big screen.
