Sources close to the production have confirmed that Luca Guadagnino's upcoming reinterpretation of 'American Psycho' will not feature a gender-swapped version of Patrick Bateman.

Speculation began circulating over the weekend after reports from UK tabloids suggested that the new adaptation might reimagine the central character—famously portrayed by Christian Bale in the 2000 film—as female, with Margot Robbie rumoured to be in consideration. The rumours quickly gained traction online, but insiders have made it clear that this concept is not being pursued.

'American Psycho' Reboot Speculations

Interest in Guadagnino's 'American Psycho' has been high ever since the project was first revealed by Lionsgate a year ago. The director's reputation for stylish and psychologically charged storytelling, as seen in films like 'Call Me by Your Name,' and 'Bones and All,' has sparked intense curiosity about how he will reinterpret Bret Easton Ellis's notorious 1991 novel for a new generation.

Casting speculation remains ongoing, with names like Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi frequently mentioned by fans as potential leads. However, no official casting decisions have been announced. Over the summer, Chloë Sevigny, who played Jean in the original adaptation, expressed her interest in returning to the role, though her proposal reportedly did not move forward.

The 2000 film, directed by Mary Harron, starred Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman alongside a notable supporting cast including Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto, Willem Dafoe, and Chloë Sevigny. The movie has since become a cult classic, widely praised for its dark humour and commentary on consumerism and identity.

'American Psycho' Reboot Update

Scott Z. Burns is adapting the screenplay for the new film, which is being developed by Lionsgate and produced by Guadagnino's company Frenesy Films. Sam Pressman, son of late producer Edward R. Pressman, who oversaw the original movie, will serve as executive producer through Pressman Film.

Ellis's 'American Psycho' remains one of the most controversial novels of the 1990s, telling the story of Patrick Bateman, a wealthy New York investment banker who conceals his violent alter ego beneath a veneer of status and perfection. Known for its sharp social satire and extreme depictions of violence, the novel was banned or censored in multiple countries upon its release, but has since achieved iconic literary status.

With Guadagnino at the helm and Lionsgate backing the project, anticipation continues to build for how this new interpretation will modernise the chilling world of 'American Psycho' without altering its core identity.
