The Original Story and Setting to Be
In the original-eerie novel, titled 'What Happens at Night,' written by Peter Cameron and published in 2020, an American couple travels to a lonely, snow-covered European hamlet in order to adopt a baby.
The husband is worried that the wife's condition would prohibit the adoption because she is fighting cancer and is physically weak. They check into the almost empty Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, a huge and unsettling space populated by odd characters, including a flamboyant chanteuse, a greedy businessman, and a mysterious faith healer. The couple starts to doubt themselves, their marriage, and reality as they battle through the adoption procedure.
The setting has been compared to 'Shutter Island' and is regarded as strange, haunting, and psychological.
Cast, Collaborations & Production Timeline
Following successful films such as 'Gangs of New York,' 'The Aviator,' 'The Departed,' Shutter Island,' 'The Wolf of Wall Street,' and 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' Leonardo DiCaprio is back for his seventh collaboration with Scorsese. Scorsese is directing Jennifer Lawrence for the first time, despite their past collaboration on 'Don't Look Up.'
