Rihanna is stepping into the blue spotlight as Smurfette in the upcoming 'Smurfs' reboot — and her connection to the character goes far beyond the script. According to those behind the film, the Grammy-winning superstar had a deep-rooted love for the 'Smurfs' franchise that began in her childhood, making her casting feel like a perfect match.

Director Chris Miller and Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation president Ramsey Naito recently shared how Rihanna’s passion for the 'Smurfs' became a driving force behind the project. When the creative team first met with the singer, they quickly learned that 'The Smurfs' had been her favourite show growing up. That instant connection made casting her as Smurfette feel natural, and sparked the team’s fresh reimagining of the franchise for a new generation.

Rihanna's Contribution to The Film

The filmmakers emphasised that Rihanna brought more than just star power to the production. Her insight into the characters and the emotional depth she brought to Smurfette added layers to the film’s storytelling. Her dedication didn’t just help shape the character — it influenced the tone of the entire reboot.

Rihanna’s passion also extended into the music. Earlier, she released 'Friend of Mine,' a synth-pop track featured on the 'Smurfs' movie soundtrack. The track is a lively tribute to friendship, brought to life with a colourful animated video featuring dancing Smurfs and Rihanna transformed into Smurfette.

The new film marks a major return to the big screen for the 'Smurfs', who first debuted in comic book form thanks to Belgian artist Peyo before becoming iconic through the 1980s animated series. Over the years, they’ve appeared in five feature-length films and two short films, but this latest instalment aims to breathe new life into the franchise with a fresh voice and modern storytelling.
