Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is bringing another dark, twisted tale to life with 'The Boy in the Iron Box,' and the cast is officially set. Rupert Friend has landed as the lead role in the upcoming Netflix horror film, with Kevin Durand and Jaeden Martell also joining the main cast. Filming on the movie, which is based on the six-part horror novella series by Chuck Hogan and del Toro, is scheduled to start in Toronto, Canada, in October 2025.

The film, which is written and directed by David Prior, blends gothic dread with del Toro's distinctive flair to tell a survival-horror tale set in a distant, snowbound castle.
A Tense Ensemble in a Terrifying Setting
Rupert Friend will play Liev, the seasoned leader of a group of mercenaries who take refuge in an eerie stone stronghold high in the mountains after surviving an aircraft crash. With his powerful and captivating roles in 'Homeland,' 'The Pale Blue Eye,' and 'Anatomy of a Scandal,' Friend is all set to add emotional richness and urgency to a suspenseful tale. As a survivor who must confront unspeakable atrocities, Kevin Durand, a veteran of genre television and movies such as 'The Strain,' and 'Locke & Key,' also joins the cast.

Rising star Jaeden Martell—best known for his roles in 'It,' 'Knives Out,' and 'Defending Jacob'—will play the mysterious boy trapped within the iron box, the heart of the story's psychological and supernatural terror. As their characters face the evil both inside and outside of themselves, the dynamic trio is anticipated to give a terrifying and emotionally charged performance.
'The Boy in the Iron Box' promises to combine the emotional depth that del Toro's stories are known for with exciting action, especially with such a great cast and talent.
Production Timeline, and Del Toro's Chilling Vision
David Prior will direct the movie, and del Toro and J. Miles Dale, working under the Necropia Entertainment Company, will be the producers. Using Toronto and Oakville, Ontario as its primary locations, filming will start in October 2025 and continue until January 2026.
Although Netflix has not yet disclosed a release date, insiders predict that it will launch in late 2026 or early 2027. Guillermo del Toro's distinctive style, a gripping plot, and an outstanding ensemble, can make 'The Boy in the Iron Box' one of the decade's most physically stunning and psychologically compelling horror movies.
