Scarlett Johansson recently opened up about her experience directing ‘Eleanor the Great’, calling it a deeply rewarding chapter in her career. The 40-year-old actress stepped behind the camera for the first time with the drama ‘Eleanor the Great’, starring June Squibb in the lead role. Speaking about stepping behind the camera, Johansson said the experience offered her a fresh perspective on filmmaking, particularly the work that goes into pre-production and post-production—areas actors typically don’t have full visibility into.

She shared that, as an actor, one often hopes a director recognizes and nurtures their performance, but there’s little control over how things ultimately come together. Now, having seen the process from the director’s chair, Johansson said it gave her valuable insight into the choices directors make and the sheer effort required to bring a project to life. Despite the demanding nature of the role, she found the entire journey to be incredibly fulfilling.

Johansson recently debuted ‘Eleanor the Great’ at the Cannes Film Festival, where she walked the red carpet alongside co-stars Erin Kellyman and June Squibb. She described the premiere as a powerful and emotional moment, feeling moved by the audience’s response to the film and its performances. She noted how special it was to witness Squibb being celebrated and warmly received throughout their time in Cannes.

Johansson Weighs Future Between Directing and Acting, Says She’s Still “An Actor for Hire”

However, Johansson admitted she remains undecided about whether her future lies more with directing or acting. When asked whether this film marked a new chapter in her career, she explained that she isn’t certain yet. Her main priority, she said, is to work on projects that she herself would want to watch—whether it’s a major blockbuster like ‘Jurassic World’ or a more intimate story like ‘Eleanor the Great’. She emphasized that audience appeal and storytelling quality both play a key role in how she chooses her projects.

Although she has taken on a new role behind the camera, Johansson made it clear she has no plans to step away from acting anytime soon. She affirmed that she’s still very much an “actor for hire” and intends to continue taking on screen roles alongside any future directing opportunities.
