'Weapons' and 'Barbarian' filmmaker Zach Cregger has confirmed that Austin Abrams will take the lead in his upcoming 'Resident Evil' adaptation. The actor, known for roles in 'Euphoria', 'The Walking Dead', and 'This Is Us', will portray an original character created specifically for the film.
Cregger’s take on the 'Resident Evil' franchise marks a shift from his previous projects. He has described the movie as a high-energy, visually daring horror experience — very different from the tense slow-burn style of 'Barbarian' and 'Weapons'. The director compared the tone to the over-the-top, chaotic energy of Sam Raimi’s 'Evil Dead 2', noting that the story will follow a simple structure in which a single character travels from start to finish in real time, descending deeper into increasingly nightmarish situations.

'Resident Evil' Aims to Bring Back Franchise's Horror
Positioned as a 'love letter' to the original video games, the 'Resident Evil' reboot aims to bring the franchise back to its horror roots. Cregger revealed that while he has never watched the six previous 'Resident Evil' movies, he is a long-time fan who has played the games extensively. He explained that the concept originated from a genuine creative impulse, and even without the official license, it was a story he would have wanted to tell.
The new adaptation will not focus on existing characters from the games, such as Leon Kennedy, as Cregger believes those narratives have already been told in their ideal form. Instead, the film will expand the 'Resident Evil' universe through fresh storytelling, which may surprise — and potentially divide — hardcore fans.

Earlier reports suggested the reboot would be a faithful return to the franchise’s survival horror essence, but Cregger has made clear that while the movie honours the games, it won’t be a direct retelling. The director has also hinted that its fast-paced, unconventional style could make it one of the boldest entries in the series yet.
