Simon Pegg has opened up about Quentin Tarantino’s cancelled 'Star Trek' project, describing it as one of the most unusual takes on the franchise ever conceived.
The 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' director had once pitched his vision for a 'Star Trek' movie to Paramount, reportedly impressing the studio enough to begin development. The project hit a standstill after writer Mark L. Smith shared in 2023 that Tarantino wasn’t certain he wanted 'Star Trek' to be his last movie.

What Simon Pegg Shared About the Unmade Movie?
At Fan Expo Boston, Simon Pegg, the actor behind 'Scotty' in the 'Star Trek' reboots, shared thoughts on the scrapped film. He explained that the script was exactly what fans might imagine if Tarantino took control of the 'Star Trek' universe — bold, eccentric, and pushing the boundaries of what the series had ever done. While Simon Pegg personally would have enjoyed seeing Tarantino’s interpretation, he acknowledged that long-time fans of the franchise might have been divided over its radical style.
According to Simon Pegg, the film was inspired by 'A Piece of the Action,' a 1968 episode from 'Star Trek: The Original Series'. The story would have taken place primarily on Earth in a 1930s gangster setting, blending sci-fi with a vintage crime drama atmosphere.

Mark L. Smith has previously explained that he and Tarantino exchanged ideas during the development process, but the director struggled with the thought of 'Star Trek' being his career’s final chapter. Tarantino ultimately decided not to move forward, leaving the completed script untouched on his desk.
Although this 'Star Trek' project may never make it to theatres, Tarantino is keeping busy in Hollywood. He’s gearing up to write 'The Adventures of Cliff Booth', a spin-off from 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. The film, directed by David Fincher, will be released on Netflix.
